AVAS Winter Meeting Programme 2013-14
The AVAS winter meeting programme is taking shape – the first few talks have been confirmed on the meetings page. There is an exciting set of speakers, including Gareth Owen from the New Forest Remembers WWII project, and Professor Andrew Fitzpatrick who will be talking about the Chiseldon Cauldrons.
Downton History Group Open Afternoon
The Downton History Group invite you to an Open Afternoon on Sunday 15th September in the Memorial Hall, 1pm – 4pm.
Come along and see items relating to Downton`s past, including old photos. Learn about Downton’s Roman Villa and meet soldiers of the 9th Legion from Butser Ancient Farm who, weather permitting, will bring the past to life with a bit of Roman Army re-enactment in the adjoining Memorial Hall garden, children (of all ages!) being invited to join in, suitably armed with helmets, shields, etc. provided by the Legion. Bring along any interesting items you may have and would like to know more about for identification by an Archaeologist from Wessex Archaeology. Also contributing to the afternoon will be Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum and Avon Valley Archaeological Society with finds from local excavations and who will, again if fine, demonstrate geological surveying the Memorial Hall garden.
The Memorial Hall is a short distance from where the B3080 joins the A338 PC SP5 3PD
Free Entry and Refreshments – All Welcome. Click here for the official poster for the Open Afternoon.
